I just Finished Summer Hikaru Died

So, I just finished The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren, and wow—it’s one of those stories that sticks in your head for days. It’s technically horror, but not in the jump-scare or gore kind of way. It’s quiet, sad, and honestly kind of beautiful.

The setup is simple: Yoshiki realizes his best friend, Hikaru, died. But there’s still something walking around that looks and acts exactly like him. It remembers everything, it still cares about Yoshiki, but it’s not him. And Yoshiki knows that. That’s the whole tension. He can’t let go, and he can’t accept what’s in front of him either.

The pacing is slow in a good way. It gives you space to sit with the weirdness and the grief. The horror isn’t from monsters—it’s from watching someone you love turn into something unfamiliar, and realizing you’ll never get them back.

The art matches that tone perfectly. Lots of quiet panels, calm scenery, and then out of nowhere, these creepy little details that make your stomach drop. Mokumokuren is great at that kind of subtle tension—nothing flashy, just a slow crawl of unease.

What really got me, though, is how human it feels. Yoshiki’s reactions make sense. He’s scared, he’s sad, and he’s clinging to what’s left, even when he knows it’s wrong. It’s less “fight the monster” and more “how do I live with this loss?”

If you’re expecting action or clear answers, you won’t get them. But if you like slow, emotional horror that messes with your head and heart a little, this one’s worth reading. It’s one of those stories where you finish it, stare at the last page, and just... sit there for a bit.

TL;DR: Creepy, sad, and beautifully done. Not scary in a traditional way—more of an “I feel weirdly hollow now” kind of horror.
